Epidemiology of Diabetes Melitus

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Diabetes affects approximately 38.4 million people in the USA.  This is approximately 11.6% of the population.  Prediabetes is seen in approximately 97.6 million people 18 years and older making up approximately 38% of the US population. Rates of DM doubled between 1990 and 2010.  These sharp increases in the incidence of DM has a strong collation to a number of substances released in the 1990’s including organophosphates and BPA which are still in use today.

It is estimated that by 2030 the total cost of DM in the US will reach $622 billion by 2030 and will be part of your nursing practice.
